Rescate Wildlife Rescue – What is it actually like volunteering?

Now, we have talked briefly in a previous blog about our experiences at Rescate Sanctuary. But after recently reflecting on our blog, it’s apparent that we didn’t go into much detail of what each activity looked like.

Now, if you haven’t read the blog it would be a great read before reading this one to understand where we went and the type of volunteering we were apart of. Make sure to check out the blog here.

This Blog will be more in-depth on each activity and what a typical day would look like and how beneficial the whole experience is for you!

    Day-to-Day Activities at Rescate Wildlife

To start with, let’s talk about the day to day activities. Generally they would follow a simple order of working hours from 8am – 3pm/4pm with some deviances dependant on activities.

    Feeding Route

If you have drawn the short straw (so to speak), you may have to start the day around 6:30am/7am for the feeding round. This happens routinely once a day as all the animals need feeding in the morning. This is done early as all the animals normally wake up around this time for feeding.

This task is usually 1/2 volunteers along with a ranger who goes around to each animal and provides them with the right amount of food. Now, with this being a large sanctuary this will take a few hours and will require different foods to satisfy the diversity at the sanctuary. You will be tasked to prepare the food (fruits mainly) for specific animals before taking off to feed. The group will have a wheelbarrow’s worth of food which will be taken around the park and each diet will be feed one by one.

As the majority of animals require a fruit diet, this is the one that takes the longest as the monkeys, peccaries, all the farm animals, birds, reptiles, mammals and more require the fruit! Each enclosure will be approached and fed the correct amount of food according to the number of animals and type of animal.

This is a fun experience as many of the animals are into a routine of knowing when it’s feeding time so they become excited at your presence. For the simple animals to feed, you may be tasked to hand the food out but of course keeping a safe distance and placing the food in the correct area of the enclosure.

Then you have the meat eaters, so basically all of the felines/canines plus the odd animal like the Greater Grison (worth googling if you don’t know them! They are like a ferret or a weasel).

These animals are fed raw meat, usually chicken or darker meats similar to what they would eat in the wild. This is an opportunity to get up close with the larger predators and understand the sheer dominance and power of these animals.

For anyone who is looking to use this towards their career aspirations to be a vet or go into animal care, then this is a great opportunity to ask questions and understand more.

Please note that the animals aren’t kept in small cages- the jaguar for example came to an area for food but was free roam in his very large enclosure!

    Observation

Observation may be seen as quite a boring part of your day and one that not many look forward to. However, once you understand the reasons for it, it can be very insightful and help you know more about each species individually.

The observation is exactly what it says on the tin. You are there to observe a select animal or species to see it’s usual or unusual movements and activities in a typical hour of the day. Now, the observations change each day depending on the research of the rangers but when we volunteered it was usually the grey fox, coyote’s or the squirrel monkeys.

The observation would usually include 2 – 4 volunteers with one ranger to oversee the project and is used on tablets provided by the sanctuary to note down all the information. Each species had a different enclosure so you would be required to take note of the following: location in the enclosure, what they were doing, and maybe even how high were they (this is for the monkeys). This was recorded every minute on the minute for 30 minutes.

The Coyote’s for instance were pretty simple to monitor as they usually sleep most of the day and all you have to do is make sure you are monitoring the right Coyote… This can be difficult. As we remember it, there are 4 different Coyote’s, being Vinni Van, Bugs, Yep, and another one we cannot remember at all.

The Coyote’s had specific features including one with a poorly eye, or one with part of it’s ear missing. This is important to recognise who is who when observing their behaviours.

As it’s an enclosure, you will be observing from a distance and therefore might not have full visibility. This is very obvious in the monkey enclosure with the trees and leaves constantly blocking your view.

Observation is imperative to see how the animals are interacting with each other and if they are acting normal. It’s important as they are in an enclosure and the aim is to minimise the stress for each animals so doing this can allow the rangers to reduce stress if required.

    Animal Enrichment

Animal Enrichment is where you are tasked to create different ‘toys’ that help with their cognitive function. Being in an enclosure is the best place for them but even they can get bored being limited to a space. However, this is the best place for them as they cannot be re-released so they need occupying.

The best way to do this is by making natural games/toys for the animals to enjoy. Enrichment is usually measured by how much they interact with the object.

Below we have provided some examples of the enrichments we made:

    • Rope and Bamboo Ladder

This was made using large bamboo sticks that were cut down to 2 feet long bars. We used roughly 6/8 of them which we lined up and used large lines of rope which we weaved through the bamboo holes (created by drilling on either end). This was then all attached and could hold a significant amount of weight. This is perfect as this bamboo rope ladder was made for large spider monkeys which can weigh up to 5 kg.

So it is important to make a sturdy, resilient bamboo ladder that will not sway too much and hold up the monkeys as they swing.

Enrichment ladder made for the monkeys
This is jack making the rope ladder!!
    • Monkey Puzzles

This is a log that has a few holes drill out of it so that you can stash small treats in for the monkeys to find. As the monkeys are really smart, it’s important to hide the prize using natural materials like hay or feathers. The monkey’s are used to this enrichment so find this easy so it’s important to keep their brain working so to make it harder, you can wedge a branch in the gap which is stiff and hard to pull out. The monkey will learn that in order to get the treat they will need to find a way into the gap.

The monkey will finally remove the sturdy stick from the gap and rummage until they have found the sweet treat! It’s such a handy puzzle to give the monkey as you can observe them figuring it out and they are stubborn so don’t expect them to give up!

    • Log filled with Onions

Now this sounds like an odd one but the peccaries absolutely love raw onion.. Awful, we know!!

It’s basically a chucky log which you are to put divots in all along the sides. The aim is to make the divots large enough that you can stuff little pieces of onions in there for the peccaries to find and eat. However, it was very difficult to make the divots the correct size so they fit but also didn’t easily fall out. In the end, we did what we could and ended up rubbing the whole log with onion so they could smell the scent and potentially play with it regardless.

The enclosure is situated a little away from the path so the logs would need to be thrown into the pen. This is tough as a lot of the enrichment ideas need to be sturdy enough to survive the throw. But there is a positive! The peccaries notice the noise and run over the check it out so they definitely will be aware of the log for sure.

On first glance it didn’t seem to be very popular with the peccaries as none of them showed much interest. However, after 10 or so minutes one of the peccaries ended up vigorously nudging it and smelling it in a playful manner which was awesome!

This lasted for a good 10 minutes until the peccary accidently knocked it into their mud bath which it was then covered and we think the onion smell disappeared. However, we would definitely call this a success! In the other peccary pen, it really wasn’t as popular as the peccaries ignored it.

    Training

This training was essential to help with taking care of the animals for the duration they were there. This is done on any dangerous animals so usually the felines or canines. The point of this training would be to imitate when they would need to do check-ups on the animals. They would feed the animals and softly jab them in the side with a utensil which would imitate an injection.

The animals will get used to this feeling and it will be easier when doing health check ups in the clinic.

The animals will also be fed during this time so it’s a win win for both! The animals we saw this used on was mainly ocelots and Guapo, the Jaguar.

    Clinic

The clinic is a small outhouse halfway through the sanctuary that houses all the injured/newly welcomed animals in the sanctuary. The animals that are housed here are usually injured and requiring antibiotics, surgery or time to recover. These animals are treated differently to the ones around the sanctuary as they are completely wild. They are to be treated as wild which includes no interaction at all. This includes making eye contact or any gestures.

The reason for this is that most the animals that are in the clinic are planned to be re-released. Any sort of interaction is unnatural for the animals and may imprint on them.

The animals here are different depending on which animals need to be there so it’s a total mystery before you enter.

The usual tasks in here is odd parts like collecting branches for enclosures, altering enclosures in there so it’s comfortable for new inhabitants and cleaning enclosures. We were lucky enough to be tasked to clean the sloth enclosure in the clinic which was a surreal moment for us. As some of you may know, Sloths are Aimee’s favourite animal and pretty much the whole reason we went Costa Rica in the first place. Here, we were able to get up close and personal with them while cleaning which was definitely a highlight!

Luckily, Sloth’s are one of the few animals that don’t get imprinted by humans but we still respected their space and admired them from a distance.

    Different roles?

The Sanctuary also has other opportunities based on what your interests are. One example being Aimee worked with their marketing team to support their Social Media accounts which was mutually agreed upon before arriving. This meant that she had less physical hours in the day but had social media tasks which she undertook while Jack was working with the animals.

This really helped balance Aimee’s day due to ongoing health conditions she had at the time. The Sanctuary was very supportive of this and would not push any volunteers to do something they don’t want to do.

Upon meeting the workers there and the team, Aimee expressed an idea of painting a mural in the living space that can symbolise the sanctuary and all the efforts of each volunteer that has helped.

This was an idea Aimee came up with and on one day in our spare time we headed out to grab some paint with a friend that worked at the sanctuary before starting the next day. Aimee spent the last 2 days sketching and then painting a mural on the wall. As it was at the end of the trip, time was limited but aimee managed to finish it moments before we got in the taxi to leave.

It’s a part of us that is at the sanctuary now and everyone sees when volunteering here! We are so grateful for the sanctuary to allow this and are very supportive in creative new ideas, so what’s to lose. The photo of the tree painting is below – we definitely need to go back and see it soon!

    Overview of volunteering at Rescate

The Sanctuary offers such opportunity with volunteering that each day will never look the same. The people are amazing and are super supportive with the volunteers which is really helpful to know. If you are looking to get some experience here towards a career of veterinary then they have a vet program which is working a lot more in the clinic to help with sick or injured animals. You will need some sort of education and knowledge to work here so check the eligibility before applying for this role!

The park is a beautiful place and the activities are so insightful to the simple life of working at a sanctuary. After leaving, Jack would be more than happy working there full-time as a volunteer but maybe another day!

Make sure to check the sanctuary out here as it’s a great place to learn about animals and also learn a lot about yourself. There’s so many amazing memories to have here and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

The Ruined Garden Restaurant in Fes, Morocco – Our Review

We travelled to morocco as a last minute trip and didn’t have many plans on where to visit and what to do. So as we arrived in Fes we didn’t have much of a plan. We wandered the beautiful tight streets in the medina but started to become hungry so it’s time to look for food. That is when we found the Ruined Garden Restaurant! Which can be described as a fairytale restaurant that is truly unique!

We also featured this restaurant in this YouTube Vlog below! Check it out!

    The Ruined Garden in Fez

After a quick search we stumbled across the Ruined Garden, which was in the heart of the medina. Now, if you are to visit during Ramadan be aware they close halfway through the day, but during the rest of the year they have better opening hours.

We were welcomed at the door which has a castle-like feel to it, with large doors at the entrance. We wandered up the few steps and entered the large garden which had scattered tables and chairs. We found a table and within a few seconds greeted by a local cat which was super friendly!

It’s very common for locals to own cats as there is an abundance in Morocco! We then ordered drinks and decided to share some food which was definitely the right decision.

The ambiance of the restaurant was beautiful, you had luscious green with fountains dotted about which is the total opposite to what the rest of the medina is. It was quiet and calming!

    Foods

We found a local dish called the B’stilla which is a local meal almost like a pie, but with a twist. It’s coated in caster sugar and cinnamon making it a sweet meal which sounds strange but OMG it worked! It was beautiful and we would highly recommend trying it.

We also tried the samosas which came as 3 large samosas which were generously filled with different meats! The food was amazing at the Ruined Garden and really filled us up.

B'stilla and Samosas at the Ruined Garden Restaurant in Fez

    Seating

When finishing our meal, we spent 20/30 minutes soaking up the area. We played with the cats, enjoyed the calmness of the air and even noticed some pet tortoises which came out to explore and eat their lunch! They started to wander around the grounds with the cats not taking much notice of them.

Even though they were pets it was a cool experience to see in a restaurant located in the centre of Fes, the medina. It’s something we didn’t expect but we definitely welcomed.

    Facilities

Within the restaurant they did have bathroom facilities; they were somewhat basic but had everything that was needed!

There weren’t many stairs, however due to location within the medina and the steps, we wouldn’t say it was completely accessibility friendly.

    Sinks in the restaurant bathroom.

    Cost

The restaurant was more on the expensive side than other local areas to eat, with the meals costing anywhere between 120-180 Moroccan Dirham (£10 -£14). However, we couldn’t fault the flavour and experience in the restaurant.

    Would we recommend?

We would totally recommend this restaurant to travellers who are looking to good traditional food in the centre of Fes! The food was super tasty, and the atmosphere of the place really added to the experience. Just make sure that if you do go, that you don’t let the cats manipulate you like they did to us by begging for food (they were too cute). Even though it is more expensive than some local restaurants, the food is well cooked and presented with rather large portions so we couldn’t fault it!

We hope this have helped when deciding on some places to eat in Fes and if you have visited the Ruined Garden before, please let us know below!

  • Monteverde Backpackers Hostel Review

    Monteverde Backpackers Hostel Review

Monteverde is a beautiful location, high up in the central mountains of Costa Rica which offers some astounding views. It’s a location very popular for tourists to visit to see the cloud forest which isn’t too far from the small town. However, if you have visited the country, you would know it can be rather expensive across the board. So when we visited we made sure to look for a budget-friendly hostel in Monteverde which was well located to being central to the town and close to the cloud forest. For this, we found Monteverde Backpackers hostel!

We only stayed 1 night in this hostel but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wanted to share our insights. Carry on reading to find out more!

Make sure to read further to learn more about what to expect when you visit this lovely hostel in Monteverde!

    10. Thank you for reading about our Monteverde Hostel Review!

    Location

The location for the Hostel was right on the centre of Monteverde only being a 2 minute walk to the main road. Around there are many restaurants, gift and clothes shops and supermarkets perfect for convenience. Only a 5 minute walk up the hill and down the other side is a food court which is also the bus station down off the mountain.

The main attraction for Monteverde is their cloud forests which is a 20 minute drive from the hostel.

    Hostel room experience

The room we booked was a 4 dorm room which was somewhat small but offered enough space for all your stuff. They were the usual bunkbeds with lockers below the bottom bunk for your luggage. The en-suite was a good size with a very good shower. Although the room was very simple, it’s offered at a good price and was very welcoming for sure.

    Other Rooms Available

Alternative to the 4 dorm room we stayed in, they offer a 6 person dorm and private rooms. They also provide a ‘deluxe’ 4 person dorm room which offers better beds and 2 bathrooms for the 4 guests.

    Private Room

The private room is a 3 bed private ensuite room. This is inclusive of one large double bed and one single bed. This makes it perfect for couples or groups of friends to use!

The cost of the room starts from around €34.72 which across 3 people is cheaper than any other room in the hostel! With the room, breakfast is included with free tea and coffee available. Another benefit is that the room actually includes a kitchen which you can use to cook your own meals if you don’t want to go out for food which is a great perk for budget travellers!

    Social Areas

The social area is in the reception which includes a long table which many use to gather and mingle with other travellers. There is also a ping pong table in here which is a great icebreaker for travellers and they often host games to get everyone involved!

The walls are covered in beautiful paintings and drawings of the exotic animals that live across Costa Rica creating a great atmosphere in the hostel.

    Tours Available

Monteverde backpackers have many tours available with the obvious being the Cloud Forest which is there most popular. However, there are so many more tours they offer including trips for night walks in the forest, or day trips for adrenaline sports like Ziplining, and horse riding.

These tours are a great way to see the local beauty in Monteverde and the hostel organise everything for you including everything you do on the trip and even pick-up and drop-off at the hostel.

    Would we recommend

We would totally recommend this hostel as it is a budget friendly price for it’s location. It’s right on the centre of Monteverde which limits the amount of walking you have to do as it’s very hilly here!

Also you can book breakfast for a small fee on top of the room which is convenient! If anyone has visited Costa Rica before then you will know that eating out is very expensive so this really helps to budget you time here.

Most people visit the area for their amazing activities which the hostel provide a host of options for you to do at a reasonable price. The hostel overall offers a great experience for all travellers and is a great place to visit if you are looking for a hostel in Monteverde town.

    Custom Itinerary Planning

We take pride in planning well for our own trips so that we can get the most out of the short time we are in each location. We cater to interests, find the best places to eat and stay so we never miss out on the best experiences.

So we didn’t want to keep this just for ourselves but wanted to offer our planning services to you also!

Our Custom Itinerary planning has been something we have worked on for the past few weeks so we can bring the best value to you, the traveller, when going on your exciting adventure.

For this, we have split the planning into 3 key offerings depending on the length and type of trip.

    Basic Itinerary Planner

This is for the short-term traveller that has booked an exciting getaway, and is looking to fill up their itinerary which aligns to their interests in said location (less than 2 weeks).

The benefits of this package would be an initial form which will detail your travel plans including destination, length of stay, interests, and when you are looking to travel. This information will help us understand your personality more, and help us do some prior research before meeting for a 10 – 20 minute call.

The call will be to learn more intricate details about you, and what you want to get from you experience on this trip. Here we will learn about your preferences so we can tailor and create the best itinerary for you in anticipation for your travels.

After the meeting we will use all the information gathered on the filled out form and the meeting to create the perfect itinerary full of experiences that you cannot miss out on when visiting your chosen location. Find the Basic package here.

Basic custom travel itinerary by Ourtwostepstart

    Standard Itinerary Planner

This is perfect for someone looking to travel for longer than a traditional trip of 1 – 2 weeks (up to 1 month).

As with the Basic package, a google form will be sent which details the necessary information but also more personal questions to understand more about your interests and budgeting options for this trip. We will also look to provide some of the best places to stay in the locations provided, and a planned route to travel between locations if that is desired.

We will take into consideration your budget so that we can find activities, stays and transport to keep within budget if you are looking to keep costs low. Or provide you with luxury opportunities if that is what you desire.

After the form, we will have scheduled a 40 minute call with you to discuss your travel plans and understand how we can best tailor the itinerary to your interests, budget, and timeframe including each location you want to explore.

The itinerary planner will be limited to 5 destinations across the trip with an option to discuss more on the call.

Each location will have an in-depth layout of activities, transports and places to stay (with links to the sites) which will include costs for easy viewing. The itinerary is a great benchmark ready for your exciting travels so you don’t miss out on some amazing experiences on your travels. Find the Standard package here.

    Luxury Itinerary Planner

The Luxury Itinerary Planner is for those determined long-term travellers who are ready to have an experience of a lifetime!! The luxury planner is so you can get a custom itinerary for trip that spans multiple countries and many locations without having to lift a finger!

For the luxury planner, we will provide you with our most in-depth form which will give us the most information to understand EVERYTHING you want for your long-term travels. This will include budgeting, locations, flexibility, hobbies and interests, booking preferences and a whole lot more!

Here we want to become best friends and understand everything you love about travel, so you can come back from your trip with more memories than you can imagine!

We will have up to a 60 minute call to discuss and get to know you further, before getting to work and creating the perfect itinerary for your multi-country travel.

We understand that a trip for longer than a month is rare for many people, so cutting corners is definitely not an option as we will create a fully bespoke, in-depth itinerary. The meeting will answer any questions we may have for designing the custom itinerary so you will have an unforgettable experience

As it is the luxury package, we will do heavy research into each locations transport, places to stay, activities and even the best spots to eat. Whether you want instagrammable food spots, the best local flavours or to dine like a king or queen, we will cater the itinerary to your desires and even provide average costs so there are no hidden costs for you when travelling.

Across the itinerary, there will be average costs for each location so proper budgeting is possible. Find the Luxury package here.

Yesim – The new eSIM provider perfect for travels!

There is a brand new eSIM provider that you NEED to see! They create great packages for business travel and tourism, meaning you can be connected to data wherever you go; straight from landing with the plane! This is Yesim, and let us show you why you need to get it!

With many 5 star ratings, we will explain more about this new eSIM provider that is becoming very popular (and it is even backed by companies such as world packers & Raiffeisen Bank)!

Carry on reading to get a €3 discount for your next eSIM purchase, alongside us breaking down what exactly is an eSIM, and why you need it for your travels!

    Yesim eSIM

    What is an eSIM?

A somewhat new concept that is becoming very popular in the travel community, eSIM’s are simply an electronic SIM card.

Instead of taking out and swapping between SIM cards, you can download this eSIM directly to your phone (check it’s compatibility first); meaning less hassle, and a safer way to change to your different data plans! You simply turn ‘off’ your home sim, then turn on the eSIM.

Similarly to standard SIM card plans, Yesim offers both specified data allowances (such as 10GB), or unlimited data plans- meaning you wont have a cap or extra charges for your data usage!

    Why do we use eSIM’s

For us, eSIM’s has made travelling SO much easier! Guaranteed one of us two will usually buy an eSIM prior to departure, that we can switch on once we land in the country we are headed to!

This then means if we struggle to find wifi or SIM card availability, one of us is guaranteed to have data, for if any problems do arise! It just feels a LOT safer when we go away.

    Yesim Data Plans

Yesim offers some great packages dependant on your needs!

From individual country plans (such as a Thailand eSIM, Italy eSIM etc), to Regional eSIMs (such as Southeast Asia, South America etc), alongside global packages, and uniquely, Business packages.

Their plans have over 800+ network providers, meaning for seamless connectivity wherever you go! Something interesting to note is that they offer unlimited data packages, which not all eSIM providers do!

Most plans start from around £1.30/GB, with such a long list of countries provided.

    Yesim Deals

Something very unique we have seen with Yesim is that they offer discounts that are ‘seasonal’.

For the upcoming Olympic Games in France, you can buy their SIM card here, with using the code OLYMPIC24 for €2 discount off of your purchase!

They also have a rewards system using Ycoins, where 100 coins will equal one euro to spend! By referring friends you can gain Ycoins to use for future eSIM purchases!

    Yesim Discount Code

Now, its finally time to share the discount code!

Once you click this link, use code travelpayouts2024 on checkout to receive €3 discount from your purchase! It’s really that easy to get cheap data that quickly!

  • How to swim with Wild Dolphins in Bali!!

How to swim with Wild Dolphins in Bali!!

Bali is a beautiful island in Indonesia that is very popular for nomads but also for travellers. On this large island, there are so many bucket list activities you can do, that even one month might make it hard to do everything! From cliff jumping in natural springs to climbing volcanos and swimming with manta rays and turtles, there’s endless options. The one bucket list activity we are talking about today is seeing wild dolphins in Lovina.

*This post contains affiliate links, which we may earn from. This does not come at an additional cost, but helps us to pursue this dream 🙂

    Wild Dolphins in Lovina

    Location

Lovina is a small town located on the north coast of Bali. To compare to Canggu, it is roughly 3/4 hours away by car and requires a trip through the mountains to get there. This town isn’t too popular and doesn’t have many activities here to draw travellers to but is a beautiful seaside town. One activity that is close to Lovina is the Aling-Aling Waterfall where you can cliff jump and visit natural springs for an authentic, thrilling activity. You can learn more on this blog here.

How to Book to see Wild Dolphins

There are many ways to book this activity but the best way is to look on websites such as GetYourGuide to look for private hire. Here is a link to booking ready for your private boat trip to see wild dolphins!

This activity will provide you with the full experience to see wild dolphins in Lovina! Book it here.

    Activity

Usually it is an early start. The best tour guides in Lovina will be starting the exploring first thing which requires you to be up and out by 7 am. Unethical boat tours will start around 6am whereas the dolphins are best admired around 7/8am when the water settles and boats clear.

You are picked up and taken to the beachfront where you are likely to catch the end of the sunrise which is a marvel within itself. This is something that we would recommend ALL to do when visiting Bali as there definitely are some amazing sunrises on this beautiful island! But this definitely isn’t what people are at the beach this early for so lets see the dolphins.

You can easily get into the water and wear some snorkelling goggles to marvel at the dolphins as they elegantly swim below you. As you have rented privately, you can agree a time you are out there and maybe even spend some of your time at the shore swimming near the corals and exploring the shallow water.

It truly is one of the best experiences so we would always recommend to do this but make sure to conduct it ethically to protect the dolphins and not to fund unethical practice.

    Conservation for Wild Dolphins

Be careful for when you book your tour as many tours are unethical and ‘chase’ the dolphins which isn’t good practice. We always like to encourage people to be kind to the animals and support ethical organisations who allow for people to view these amazing mammals in the right way. Here we have done some research and the best ways to see dolphin’s in the wild ethically is by renting a private boat and awaiting dolphins to come to the boat or to rent a kayak or paddleboard to venture out and see them.

Many boats will be seen leaving at 6 am and chasing the dolphins but if you are able to get a private boat then make sure to find a nice spot in the ocean and turn off the engine. The dolphins are known to be social and come up close to boats and people to play or be near. So there is no need to chase them, the best encounters are when they come to you!

As it’s known, there’s so many amazing activities to do in Bali so be sure to check out some of our other Blogs in Bali!

    Chillout Hostel Zagreb, Croatia

    Chillout Hostel Location

Situated in the heart of Zagreb city centre, Chillout Hostel is in Ilica 16, right next to all of the landmarks, nightlife, shops, restaurants and more! Just on the doorstep you will found countless things to do and see! It is also near tram links, meaning easy access around the rest of the city!

The hostel itself shares areas with the Timeout Heritage Hotel, so you will enter the same entrance for both!

    Private Room Experience

For our stay, we stayed in a private room, with private en-suite bathroom. This came at €60 per night for 2 people.

To begin with, the room was beautiful and extremely unique! The walls were covered in a newspaper print, with fascinating and quirky stories printed throughout! It then had green and gold accents… it really was stunning! The room had high ceilings and a balcony (somewhat communal? It was chained off between rooms but still visible to other rooms).

We had a double bed which was comfy, a full length mirror, a vanity dresser, wardrobe and fridge to keep things cool! (Please don’t forget to grab your snacks though… as sadly we forgot our chocolate in there 😦 …)

The bathroom was very clean. We had a sink with a large mirror, then a shower cubicle with a GREAT water pressure… oh the little things in life! The flooring even had glitter running throughout!

We were also given an electronic key card for entry, which also gives you additional perks which we will explain a bit further down!

    Other Rooms Available

Within the Chillout Hostel, you can book a standard double en-suite (which we booked), a mixed dorm of 6 bunk beds (from around £30), or a mixed dorm of 4 bunk beds (from around £35).

The dorms include their own en-suite bathrooms, and as many European accommodations, you will need to pay a city tax additionally.

    Social Areas

The hostel had many social areas!

We decided to have a drink in the rooftop terrace the evening we arrived- there is a great cocktail menu, it just depends what your budget is as most cocktails were €10+. The terrace was busy, staff were attentive, and music was playing etc!

Another area was the downstairs seating, which you would’ve walked through to reach check out! Although we didn’t sit here, we saw many people using this as a working area in the morning, but a social area in the evening!

    Bunker Nightclub

Now this was fun! Additional to the social areas mentioned above, this hostel features it’s own built in nightclub!

We mentioned the key cards didn’t we? So, the entry fee of the nightclub is squashed once you show your key card, meaning free entry to their club!

Each night is themed different, with our stay falling on the 00’s disco night! However, it was mores a late 00’s-10’s music, with the odd more modern song included!

The club was split into different areas, with extremely cool neon graffiti throughout! The drinks were a little expensive, however that is to be expected in most night-clubs.

    Tours available

At the hostel desk you will find different posters and leaflets, including some discounts for tours! One of the discounts included is for the museum of hangovers, something we will soon be sharing about!

Just ask at the front desk for any assistance.

There is also a group chat you can join, telling you about anything happening at the hostel!

Would we recommend staying at the Chillout Hostel?

We would recommend staying at the Chillout Hostel! It was in such a great location, with clean facilities and friendly staff. You can book it here.

    Is it worth the cost?

For a capital city hostel in Europe, we did think the price was okay! In comparison to local hotels we couldn’t really complain!

There was a few cheaper options, but for this location and the nightlife we are happy with our choice!

  • Is Ha Long Bay worth it?

Is Ha Long Bay worth it?

Is Ha Long Bay worth it?

Ha Long Bay is a beautiful location that is situated on the east side of Vietnam roughly 2/3 hours from the capital. The Bay is known to be one of the most popular spots to visit in the world to visit. So much so that it is known to be a natural wonder of the world. Over 10 million people are to visit the natural wonder but does it really live up to expectation? And is it worth visiting??

*This post contains affiliate links, which we may earn from. This does not come at an additional cost, but helps us to pursue this dream 🙂

Image of Ha long Bay in Vietnam, with boats and rock formations

    Transport

The best way to get here from most locations is by private taxi or coach. As mentioned it is a few hours from the capital, and these are the most popular ways that people travel to the Bay. We went directly from the Ha Giang Loop which was a sleepers bus through Hanoi and to Ha Long. This was a long journey but was overnight so the perfect place you can have a sleep and wake up at your destination.

You can check out the 12go buses here for all of your Asia bus needs, or check out the specific route here.

    The City of Halong

The city is strange… A large city with buildings standing pretty tall but not much life. We stayed on the west bank of Ha Long and we struggled to find places to eat. There weren’t many people around and felt very desolate. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time to visit the east side of Ha Long but we heard similar stories of quiet streets and a lack of life in the large city.

    Hotel

We stayed at Ruby Ha Long 8 Hotel which was on the bank of the water, a beautiful place for early morning walks. It’s a great location to see the Ha Long from the city and to go to the dock to board your boat ready to visit the islands of Ha Long. The Hotel costs roughly £15 a night and is high quality with lovely, spacious rooms, spotless bathrooms and great hosts. If you are looking to visit be sure to check out this hotel for an amazing experience here.

    Activities and Experience

There are quite a few different activities and bookings you can attend with some providing overnight stay while in the Bay.

When we visited we opted for the day trip into the bay which included a buffet lunch, kayak activities, places to swim and explore as well as cool islands and caves. The activity lasts most of the day usually ranging from 9 am through to 5/6 pm and definitely keeps you busy throughout the day.

Check out the full experience via Viator here – Halong Bay Day Trip with Cave and Titop Island From Hanoi.

To delve in deeper, we started the day in the morning and meeting at the docks to board the boat which is much larger than the boats provided across the rest of South East Asia. Usually the boats are small with limited cover but this is a proper boat!

Here you had a seating area much like a restaurant with booths either side and a walkway down the middle to a bar with drinks and snacks. There are places to go outside and enjoy the lovely weather or views throughout the day so don’t worry. In the morning they will provide you with some fruits (fresh pineapple)for a small fee and you are left to your own devices while we head to the first stop.

On the trip you head to some luscious caves deep into the bay which are very large and you are taught about the history of the bay. It’s a nice walk and can take up to 45 minutes to enjoy before you head off to your next destination. At the end of the caves there is a local shop which offers local souvenirs that you may want to buy to remember your trip by.

Another destination on the agenda for the day is Ti Top Island which gets it’s name from astronaut Gherman Titov who visited the island in 1962. The island includes a statue which looks out across the bay and also has a viewpoint that is a pretty short walk. This gives you a beautiful view of the Bay!

It’s known to be one of the top beaches in Vietnam and can be popular to visit in the busy months of the year. They have a designated area to swim in to preserve the surrounding waters. This is a common place for people to also enjoy sports including beach volleyball or just simple to relax and get an ice cream to soak up the views of this beautiful island.

The top destination on this trip for us would be this small lagoon located through a small crack in the mountain that opens up to a lake-like water. Here there are wild monkeys that live and can come up close so make sure to keep your distance as after all, they are wild animals! The hidden water is a great place to explore with a Kayak and you get roughly 1 hour to explore, check out the rock edges, look for other small gaps towards more pools of water and just to marvel at the beautiful greenery.

This location really is beautiful and is a place to soak up the natural beauty of the bay. It definitely helps you to understand why it’s a natural wonder of the world! Such a stunning location!

The lunch provided on the trip is rice with different local meats and veggies which is a great way to fill yourself up after exploring and being busy around the local islands. The food is cooked fresh on the boat and is a buffet so make sure you make the most of it.

Throughout the day, the captain will make sure to update you on each location you are to visit and the plan for the day so you are aware of proceedings.

At the end of the day you will be dropped off back at the same location you were picked up at so you can head back and get much needed rest after a long day exploring the bay.

As mentioned previously, there are options to stay overnight or even for 2 nights! This would be a great way to see the Bay away from the bulk of travelling and enjoy the natural silence and beauty. This is also an opportunity to catch the sunrise and sunset in the bay which would be a marvel within itself. Also, as it’s a natural wonder there is limited pollution so there may be a good clear sky to enjoy the stars at night.

If you are interested to know more on the overnight stays at the bay, do check it out the 2 day tour here and the 3 day tour here.

Our Thoughts on Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is a beautiful location that is full of nature and untouched islands. The stops are very informative and have a great balance of history, nature and activities that will keep you busy for the whole day for sure. The price for the day trip is budget friendly and when visiting it is definitely the number one thing to do here. Many people travel to Vietnam to visit the Bay so we would totally recommend it!

However, there are other places across South East Asia that are just as beautiful if not more so, including the South of Thailand and Palawan. If we could only recommend visiting one location we would recommend opting towards the South of Thailand and Palawan. We feel these are better value for money and have more opportunity to experience all of what the islands have including snorkelling, turtles and meeting locals on isolated islands.

To learn more about these opportunities in the South of Thailand please check out more here. For more on Palawan, Philippines, check out our blog post here.

We hope you enjoyed this blog and wish you an amazing trip wherever in the world you are travelling. We are currently showcasing all our travels, trips and experiences on our social media’s below so be sure to check them out.

  • Walking with Wild Deer in Denmark; Marselisborg Deer Park

Walking with Wild Deer in Denmark; Marselisborg Deer Park

Europe is full of many beautiful rural spots to look at nature. Whether it’s admiring the alp mountains or just the fields of southern France, it’s widely known to have scenic countryside views which many don’t know about. Being European, we attempt to visit Europe often to enjoy the major cities but also some of the lesser known locations and smaller towns and cities in different countries. The location of Aarhus, Denmark was one we didn’t know much about and when doing our research we came across a local park outside the city which was known for having wild deer which you could walk with… So we did exactly that!

Read more to find out about the Marselisborg Deer Park and how you can walk alongside wild deer in Denmark!

    Visiting Aarhus in Denmark

As our Aarhus trip was a 24 hour holiday, we didn’t have much time to lose and probably would of spent a little more time in the park if we had time. You can out a bit more about Aarhus here. Alongside our 24 hour trip here!

Whilst in Aarhus you can stay at this hostel for a budget friendly (& high quality) stay!

How to get to Marselisborg Deer Park

The best way to get to the park is either through a private taxi, but as budget travellers we opted to wait for the public bus, which you can catch from Aarhus’ city centre.

As we were on a schedule, waiting for the bus wasn’t the smartest idea as we waited for an hour at least but finally the bus arrived. It’s only a 10/20 minute bus ride out of the city to a small bus stop at the Ballehage/Ørneredevej bus station . From here you walk 10 minutes into the woods following a small road which leads up to a trail. The park is by the water and is protected with fences. As you enter you are given signs of how to stay safe.

    The Deer Park + Experience

The deer can be very protective – especially with the males if it is mating season. So make sure to take caution and make no sudden movements when near them. Now you have entered and closed the gate behind you, you can wander around the park and explore to see what you can find. As we were late, we only spend roughly 1 hour 30 here but would likely spend more.

About 5 minutes into the park is an open area where the majority of the deer stay which is the best spot.

We would totally recommend spending a little to buy some fresh carrots or apples from the local shop to feed the animals. We weren’t aware of this before going but managed to find some on the floor to feed them which was adorable! At the time of visiting, there were a few calf’s running around with their mothers and playing in the park.

The deer are used to humans and therefore are happy to come up to you if you are offering food and don’t mind being toughed. It’s such a beautiful park and location that we found a nice spot to sit down and enjoy watching the deer wander. Within eyesight there must be 50/70 deer at least.

When to visit Marselisborg Deer Park

The park is usually quite busy with people from lunchtime onwards till closure, so we would recommend to visit earlier in the morning for the best experience! However, it is a nice lunchtime activity, so depending on your allotted time available it depends when is best to visit!

We visited during ‘golden hour’ which is itself was extremely beautiful.

The Marselisborg Deer Park in Aarhus

This is a must do when visiting Denmark and was such a surreal experience.

  • Fast Travel vs Slow Travel: The best way to Backpack and Travel!

Fast Travel vs Slow Travel: The best way to Backpack and Travel!

Travelling is a daunting thought especially for first-time travellers. You have so much planning and decisions to make before even getting there and it can definitely feel like a full-time job if you are unsure on what you are doing. The best way we found is to break it down as shown in our blog post here which is a great step-by-step guide to planning your first travelling experience!

    Slow Travel vs Fast Travel

    What are travel styles?

Let’s get back to types of travel.

For us, there are two main styles of travel. The first being fast travel, and the second being slow travel. Now, what do they mean?

Fast travel is when you go travelling and move through each location at a quicker pace. And as you guessed it, slow travel is the opposite! This is where the locations you travel are travelled slower.

We need to look at the best parts of each and even the drawbacks to see which of these types of travel will suit you or the places you are going.

    Fast Travel

    Let’s start with Fast Travel.

It all really depends on the type of person you are and the places you go. But Fast travel is all about moving fast and doing all the ‘important’ activities and places in each location. This can be a desired way to travel due to time constraints, but not necessarily due to the love of travelling fast. If you are travelling for the summer and want to visit loads of places, then you might only give yourself just enough time to do everything.

When doing this you won’t generally have much downtime to relax or wander about to find activities. This is usually following a plan and having many of your days pre-planned so you don’t miss any of the main activities!

A major benefit to doing this is you get to see many amazing places, more than what you would see if you did slow travel. You can tick off many top locations that are spread across different places in a shorter time.

However, even with the benefit of seeing more, there are definitely some drawbacks.

The first major one is money. It’s likely to cost more than slow travel as you are requiring to book accommodation or transport at a shorter notice than slow travel. Also, you don’t have to luxury of chill days where you won’t be doing activities I(so called cheaper days). As you are strapped for time, convenience is really the importance when travelling like this so make sure to budget for this.

Burnout!! Travel burnout is a real thing, especially when you are doing fast travel. If you are constantly on your feet, moving locations and dragging you backpack around, it will mentally tire you out. Some days you will need ‘days off’ so be sure to take these when required!

There’s also so much more chance to go wrong! The travel plans will be packed so any setback will make a difference. Even if it’s a delayed flight or finding out a place of interest is closed, it will push EVERYTHING back and you won’t have any time spare to make up this time.

Be careful when doing fast travel. We think it’s a good option if you really are strapped for time and don’t have a choice but would always recommend to leave 1 day free for every 10 in case of delays or problems. Trust us, you’ll need it! Also, if you have a lot to see make sure you are organised when planning so you don’t make mistakes and miss any of these once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will leave you in a grump.

    Slow Travel

Now, let’s talk about slow travel.

Slow travel is a lot more popular for travellers to use even when they don’t know they are using it. Slow travel is the desired style of travel for us. But sometimes it’s not always possible. So lets deep dive into the different benefits of slow travel and the reasons why people may avoid using it!

Slow travel is great for giving yourself the time for recovery on down days so you can enjoy the best of each location. Here, you aren’t forced to run around everyday looking to complete all the best activities of each location. You can take your time and plan it well instead of cramming it in.

An example was when we travelled Bali, we booked a jewellery class for the morning but had to catch a ferry at lunchtime so had to cut our jewellery time short and almost didn’t complete our makings! If we had the option to slow travel we could of completed the jewellery class on a day where we didn’t have much else planned so we didn’t miss part of the experience.

When going back, we would like to complete the full experience!!

Also with slow travel, you have these extra days or even parts of a day to relax. These pockets of time with nothing booked are heavily needed to recover and calm your body before.

You may want to fill this time with another activity if you feel up for it, but if you are long term travelling, it’s important to have this type of downtime. This could be in a bar drinking and playing pool with friends, or even as simple as laying by the pool or beach with a book. Your body can regenerate and gain energy ready to go again.

We see a lot of travellers get the ‘travel burnout’ by not giving themselves this time off. We were the same when we started but make sure to pace yourselves so you make the most out of every opportunity!

Slow Travel gives you time to appreciate the places you have been by seeing things you wouldn’t necessarily if you fast travelled. You will see parts of each place that travellers miss and these could be the best memories for you. An example is befriending locals who you see everyday or you visit to eat at their food spot. These relationships are built overtime and cannot be accomplished in one meet.

In Bali, when taking time to recoup energy we found ourselves visiting the same breakfast spot daily at a similar time and they always greeted us well and served amazing food! They would reserve the spot for us as we became regulars in our favourite spot and would speak with them daily. It wasn’t a busy food spot but rather a quant brunch shop we ended up loving. Similar happened in Krabi, Thailand.

When you look back on your travels you will have these memories of a small food stop or a local you spoke with which you may not have if you only visited the top places in each area. You have to think, when you visit each location you are only experiencing 1% of what it has to offer usually so make sure to expand your horizons to see what else the place has to offer. And there’s not better way to do this than have a few days extra to visit the local market, speak with locals or go for a walk in the centre to see what you find!

Believe it or not but slow travel is cheaper!! If you are on a budget then you might want to look at this as an option (if you can!). Anytime you book something last minute or only a day in advance, you are likely to pay more for it. That’s why they say if you are to book a flight, book it for next year. Sometimes you cannot do this but if you are booking your transport and flights last minute as you are moving quickly through countries, you are likely to spend more doing so.

You are also limited to the itinerary you have organised so if you need to be at one place in 2 hours and the cheaper option is a train which leaves in 3 hours, you will have to find an alternative. This may be spending two or even 3 times more on private transport.

However with slow travel you can book a few days in advance. This provides more options for you including more budget friendly options. It’s always good to note that public transport is nearly always cheaper than private.

Slow Travel also has some drawbacks that many may not consider when travelling. One being that many people choose to fast travel and not slow travel so when you are meeting people, it’s easier to align your itineraries with friends if you travel fast. A lot of the time when travelling slow you may find that you will meet friends who will soon leave the place you are staying in making you envious.

A lot of popular places follow a similar route so if you are travelling at the same places with similar itineraries, you will stick together. Slow travel can disrupt this and give you a massive feeling of FOMO (Fear of missing out!!).

If you are keeping your travel plans open, you can definitely change between fast and slow as you wish but for some can be quite daunting!

Also, slow travel can be limiting if you are spending a lot more time in each location. Most people who are travelling have a plan roughly on how long they want to travel for and where. But if you want to see many countries, you may have to sacrifice a few to travel slow.

If your dream is to travel all of south east Asia, and you have 3 months, you may have to bookmark some countries for your next travel as you won’t be able to fit them all in.

Yes you have the benefit of seeing more of each country, but you may miss big bucket list things like swimming with whale sharks in the Philippines or island hopping in Thailand as you may miss whole countries all together.

Unfortunately it’s the sacrifice we have to make, whether it’s fast travel and missing the little things or slow travel and missing some bucket list activities. You cannot have it all!

    How should I Travel?

All in all the type of travel is totally dependant on the type of experience you want and where you go. We would always recommend checking your itinerary and deciding based on your travel plans but it’s always good to know the benefits and drawbacks of both types.

Fast travel is such a whirlwind of activities, emotions and bucket list activities which is amazing but definitely including many highs and lows. Basically a lot more can go wrong and it’s likely to be more expensive! So be careful and strap in for an amazing ride.

Slow travel is more like a nice cruise, it’s amazing to see each location and the intricate beauties they have. But there’s only so many locations you will see as not many people have unlimited travel time. You will unfortunately be limited to less countries and locations but deep-dive into each location.

As we look forward towards our travels, we would love to slow travel as a rule. However, some places would work well for us with fast travel like cities. An example of this was our trip to Morocco! You can see our Fez Vlog Part 1 & Fez Part 2, Meknes Vlog, and Rabat Vlog which can show how fast travel worked for us!

Let us know your thoughts on fast and slow travel and your preference when travelling. We would love to know any benefits or drawbacks to either that we haven’t mentioned to see further insights to your travels.

This backpack has a hip strap to help carry the bag, a breathable harness strap, and comes in multiple colours!

Compression Packing Cubes – Compression cubes are our favourite packing accessory! These cubes are similar to the normal packing cubes, but feature a compression zip, meaning you can compress your clothes down… this makes packing easier, limits the space you are using, and means more room for souvenirs etc!

Powerbank – Don’t lose power when travelling! It isn’t always guaranteed to find charging ports, so we would always suggest carrying a spare power bank, just incase you do run low on power when you need it!

Universal Travel Plug Adapter – Most backpackers/travellers visit multiple countries during one trip. And that means it isn’t guaranteed you will be using the same plug head during each place. A universal plug is great as it lets you switch between each plug head style all in one item! We love ours, it has USB slots meaning multiple items can be charged at once.
