These are the top blog titles ready for your views to skyrocket.

We hope these ideas have helped create some ideas of your own and help create some amazing stories to support others on their journey.

If you are still deciding on whether to make that leap and start a blog, then this is your sign to do so. There is no time like the present and if you love travel than it’s perfect for you! We have given you a few simple steps on how to start up a blog below for beginners.

    How to start a Blog

    Choose a Domain Name

This can coincide with any other social media travel accounts you have or maybe even your name. It doesn’t have to be overly unique, but something regarding you or travel would suffice. Maybe even a mix of both.

We chose to get a custom domain which makes it look a lot more professional to viewers. Dependant on the name, they can be really cheap and is a yearly payment, or sometimes even over 3 years.

    Choose a Host

Now, this is a tricky part. There are a lot of hosts to choose from but it’s important to choose one that works with WordPress. They are user-friendly and it’s the perfect place for beginners to start and learn how all this works. When you are starting, it is best to start on a simple package as you won’t be needing to pay much as you are just starting out.

    Decide your niche

Whether you are looking to go into travel writing or another topic, make sure to make it more niche as there must be thousands of travel bloggers out there. But if you are looking to travel with a pet for instance, there will be a lot less bloggers and could give you an advantage and different perspective.

    Basic SEO Research

SEO means Search Engine Optimisation and is a great way to have your blogs seen online. Some simple research will help you get some views and put you in a good position to grow your blog in the coming months.

We didn’t know about this and we have started to see the benefits from knowing more on SEO research so try to get ahead if you can!

  • Aling Aling Waterfall Experience – Complete Guide

Aling Aling Waterfall Experience – Complete Guide

Bali is such a busy place for travellers and backpackers to visit that you often get caught up with the crowds. On the island there is so much to do and see that you can often get overwhelmed with the options. Do you head west to Canggu which is a surfers paradise? Or east to the party islands? Or maybe stay central in the small authentic town of Ubud? The island of Bali has so many locations that offers scenic views and adventurous activities so it’s easy to miss the small things! This is Aling Aling Waterfall, and is a place to check out for sure!

*This post contains affiliate links, which we may earn from. This does not come at an additional cost, but helps us to pursue this dream 🙂

    Aling Aling Waterfalls

When doing initial research of Bali we can conclude that many don’t list Aling-Aling Waterfalls at top of the itinerary but for us we would put it on there for sure. It’s location is isolated but is located roughly 30 minutes south of Lovina which is a popular spot to swim with wild dolphins! Be sure to check out our best spots in Ubud here to get the best itinerary for that part of the island.

Many seem to not notice the wonder that is Aling-Aling waterfalls and merely pass by it when visiting Lovina. However, we would totally recommend visiting and seeing the natural wonder hidden deep in the mountains.

    Finding and Entering Aling Aling

This waterfall is a hidden wonder of Bali, off a mountain road and has 3 main cliff jumping points, and 1 natural water slide. At the site there is a large car park and an entrance fee of roughly £8 per person if you want a guide to take you, or £2 without a guide. Please note that if you don’t take a guide you are not able to swim or enjoy the natural waterslide or cliff jumps- and will be fined if you are caught.

The actual Aling-Aling waterfall doesn’t allow swimming or cliff jumping as it sits at roughly 200 metres which is far too high for us!! However, there are set locations which allow this with a 5 metre platform and a swimming area at the base of a natural waterslide. The waterslide is very simple. You sit at the top of the fall which is roughly 10 metres up and you slide down the rocks which is softened by the flow of water before dunking in the beautiful pool below

    The Aling Aling Waterfall Experience

The 5 metre jump is perfect for people who aren’t too confident in heights (or water) and is an easy ledge to practice on! The slide seems scarier but once you do it, you are likely to want to ride it again! Below is the slide in action!

Further down the stream, you have higher cliff spots which are perfect for adrenalin junkies and confident jumpers. When we experienced these falls the weather really challenged us with torrential rain and flooding but this didn’t stop us from completing these jumps! The first cliff jump which is 10 metres was personally the hardest and is a simple leap from a ledge into the waters below.

The 2 further cliff jumping locations were 15 metres but looked the same as the 10 metre. There was only one slight difference minus the height difference. The 1st 15 metre jump required you to leap away from the side to avoid overhanging rocks before reaching the pool below. This is a hard thing to commit to but make sure to jump outwards! At each activity location there are steps so you can make your way back up to the jumping spot again or to watch your friendly make the leap!

We didn’t make our way to the final jumping spot due to the weather but as it was the same height it didn’t matter too much. The location is in the heart of the mountains, in the jungle so be aware of your footing as it is all natural terrain.

Check out one of the jumps below!

    Is it worth it?

Usually this activity would take around 1/2 hours to enjoy and just beside the waterfall car park is a local place serving food which is a great place to grab a meal after all that jumping you did! It serves local food with the usual amazing flavours.

For us, this is an activity we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Bali as it’s got everything! Adventure, beauty, nature, hiking. It’s a perfect way to spend half a day while travelling the island. We would recommend hiring a taxi to Aling-Aling if there is a group of you. If you are an individual or just you and a friend, you can also hire bikes and head there if you are confident in your motor skills!

We hope you enjoyed our experience and would love to know your thoughts on Aling-Aling waterfalls and if you would dare to jump the 15 metres!

It boasts quality durability, is lightweight with a great framework and is a great option for most people! This backpack has a hip strap to help carry the bag, a breathable harness strap, and comes in multiple colours!

Compression Packing Cubes – Compression cubes are our favourite packing accessory! These cubes are similar to the normal packing cubes, but feature a compression zip, meaning you can compress your clothes down… this makes packing easier, limits the space you are using, and means more room for souvenirs etc!

Powerbank – Don’t lose power when travelling! It isn’t always guaranteed to find charging ports, so we would always suggest carrying a spare power bank, just incase you do run low on power when you need it!

Universal Travel Plug Adapter – Most backpackers/travellers visit multiple countries during one trip. And that means it isn’t guaranteed you will be using the same plug head during each place. A universal plug is great as it lets you switch between each plug head style all in one item! We love ours, it has USB slots meaning multiple items can be charged at once.

    Visiting Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is a beautiful treasure of Thailand! With the best time to visit being between December – April (this is not necessary at all, however, these periods are recommended for the best visit), explore the perfect bliss of this national park.

Multiple trip variations exist, including different activities such as hikes boat tours etc! We have listed this one, which includes a morning jungle hike, two wildlife safaris by longboat, two lunches, dinner and breakfast!

Find the link to an amazing 2 day experience in Khao Sok National Park here.

    Encountering wild Elephants

One of the most awe-inspiring activities in Khao Sok is the chance to see wild elephants in their natural habitat. As you venture deep into the park, guided tours can lead you to areas where these magnificent creatures are known to roam. Imagine the thrill of spotting a herd of elephants bathing in a river or feeding on lush vegetation. Be sure to maintain a respectful distance, allowing these gentle giants to go about their day undisturbed.

When we venturing through the national park, we spotted a mother elephant meander down to the waterfront with her young calf for hydration. This was a truly surreal experience which left us in wonder. It’s amazing to see parts of this beautiful country protected to allow these beautiful creatures freedom to roam and be wild.

    Kayaking and exploring

When arriving at your chosen stay for your time in the national park, you are free to explore the local surroundings which include free access to a kayak! This gives you freedom to explore the waters and and limestone cliffs. There is so much to see you cannot miss out on this! While exploring you can see gibbons calling and swinging through tall trees, storks/hawks & eagles gliding through the skies, or if you are lucky… elephant or a shy Tapir meandering near the waters edge! The waters are crystal clear with many fish visible to spot.

A kayak trip would be perfect to take photos, just relax and be one with nature for a short while. The park is beautiful everywhere you look so be sure to soak up all the surrounding views and all the natural beauty.

    Hiking Trails

Khao Sok is crisscrossed with an array of nature trails, each offering a unique perspective on the park’s biodiversity. The park’s guided hikes range from leisurely walks to challenging treks, catering to all levels of fitness and adventure. As you traverse these paths, you’ll encounter a rich variety of flora and fauna. Listen to the symphony birds and spot exotic flowers in bloom. Popular trails include the scenic route to Sip-et Chan Waterfall, where you can cool off with a refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters.

While wandering the trails, you will encounter broken trees from wild elephants not so elegantly weaving through the forests. You may even be lucky enough to find elephants footprints but these are rather hard to come by. Be sure to watch out for any leaches which are common in Khao Sok and hard to notice. We were shown a demonstration by our guide on how to spot and remove them so hopefully you will too!

Exploring the Caves of Khao Sok

Khao Sok is dotted with intriguing caves waiting to be explored. One of the most famous is the Coral Cave, named for its stunning coral-like formations. A guided tour will take you through narrow passages and vast chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The cool, dim interiors offer a fascinating contrast to the bright, humid jungle outside. Some caves involve wading through water and emerging in secluded forest areas, adding an element of adventure to your exploration.

The reach caves, you may require to embark on long hikes or bamboo rafting across rivers to your chosen cave. Some may even require the physical activity of climbing steps or rocks to the entrance of the cave. It is so worth it!

    Night Tours in Khao Sok

Although this sounds daunting, this can be one of the best ways to see a lot of the wildlife in the national park. A lot of the wildlife are nocturnal which will open up a whole new experience with different encounters than in the day. Bats can be seen darting through the blackened skies and you may even spot a leopard out on the hunt. You will have a expert guide navigating you through the jungle with a flashlight your only visibility. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! As you are hidden deep in the national park, the stars will be shining at their brightest giving you a beautiful natural show when you look up.

Swimming in the lakes of Khao Sok National Park

At your accommodation, you will have free time to entertain yourself and what better way to do this than going for a swim in the lake. The waters are so clear and pure, inviting you in! As you are staying on bungalows, this offers a great opportunity to jump in and enjoy your time with picturesque beauty in the background. There’s something truly peaceful about going for a gentle swim in the lakes in the clear water to unwind. Alternatively, it’s also a perfect spot to sit on the side of the bungalows and read a book and watch the world go by. There’s barely a pin drop in national park so just kick back, relax and soak it all in! There’s not many better views in South East Asia than this national park so be sure to make the most of it!

    Is Khao Sok Worth visiting?

Khao Sok National Park was definitely one of the many highlights that stood out during our time in Thailand and South East Asia! There’s so much to do and see and if we went back we would definitely spend longer there, just being in the wild. It’s a place everyone should visit and one we couldn’t recommend enough!

  • 6 Proven Ways to Monetize Your Travels: Expert Tips for Earning While Exploring

6 Proven Ways to Monetize Your Travels: Expert Tips for Earning While Exploring

We understand your pain… you want to travel, but you don’t have the money? Or, you have SOME money, but don’t want your travels to stop?

As we are on our monetisation journey too, we wanted to share some of the ways we are trying to earn, alongside some top tips from other creators! We are SO excited to monetise our travels, and we are so excited to help others do the same!

Below we share some key ways to earn money while travelling, ready for your worldwide trips! These will include options for people with NO social media following, people with a following, and everyone inbetween!

*This post includes affiliate links – these do not cost you anything extra, but means we might earn a commission; this helps us to continue making content and chasing our dreams 🙂

    Blogging

Like our page, many people have started their travel blogging journey! It isn’t necessarily a ‘get rich quick’ way of earning, and we aren’t yet to see big figures! However, within the first month we did make a few cents, which doesn’t sound a lot; but this was SO exciting for us! It shows that it is possible!

Part of the blogging experience does include some other monetisation links, like mentioned below, but implementing ads is one way your blog can directly earn money! We have the option to add in ads at certain places within a blog… Like we have put just below here!

These spaces can earn just by page views, and some are click-through earners! We would suggest starting the blog sooner rather than later, just because it does take time. Even if you have a decent social media following, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll transfer onto your blog.

    Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are a game changer for SO many! As a travel content creator, you are likely to share recommendations naturally… So, why not try to earn from it? Affiliate links come at no extra cost to the customer, but means you can earn a commission based off of their purchase through your links!

We are using TravelPayouts, which has a wide range of travel based affiliate programs, such as HostelWorld, Booking.com, Airalo and more! It shows your commission stats on an easy to use table, with integrated tools and widgets that makes using affiliate links so easy! Find the link to TravelPayouts here.

They have some amazing commission bases, with some being over 50%! Some programs also have amazing cookie lifetimes (with some being 30/31 days), meaning if someone clicks the link, and purchases 10 days later, since its within your cookie lifetime you should earn commission based on that purchase! Some programs do have entry requirements, so it is beneficial to have some sort of social media following! We have been accepted onto quite a few programs when we had just hit over 2k followers, which isn’t massive compared to many travel content creators!

    UGC

This seems like the new kid on the block! UGC has taken the online world by storm, and we do see why! UGC stands for User Generated Content, which in essence is creating adverts for businesses to use. These usually differ from sponsored posts, which we will explain more about below!

UGC very rarely requires a social media following, however, if you have numbers to back up your content it is always beneficial! We would also recommend posting to TikTok for your UGC journey, as in time you can apply to the TikTok shop creators program, which can earn you commission for marketing those TikTok products!

There is so much information on TikTok to find about UGC, and we would love to share more about this if it is of interest! Please let us know by either liking or commenting on this post if you would like a full guide into UGC!

Many people are earning hundreds, if not thousands monthly with UGC. It isn’t a ‘pyramid scheme’, as some people assume. It is just a new form of freelance services, You are making quality, relatable adverts for brands to use on social media, that is basically it!

    Freelance jobs

UGC is of course a freelance career, however, if you have skills that are transferrable, then maybe look into freelancing! Some skills include graphic design, accounting, travel planning amongst many! You can post your services, or find gigs, on platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork! This allows you to be more flexible with what work you take on!

If you would however want a bit more security, there is a multitude of jobs that allow remote working. You would need to ensure your working hours align with the current time of where you are located, alongside making sure you have reliable wifi, and can meet your job requirements! Some jobs even prefer if you are willing to relocate due to offices sometimes being located across many countries and continents!

    Travel Photography

We aren’t yet using this strategy, however this is something we are now starting to organise!

From tourism boards, to airlines, to general online websites, travel photography is used in a variety of places! It builds information into something appealing to the eye!

Think of it this way, you see a holiday to Spain being advertised. If it was just text, you likely won’t be interested. However, if this ad is coupled with beautiful photos of that location, with things to do/see, you are SO much more likely to be intrigued.

Travel photography can be monetised in a few ways.

You can find stock image websites to sell your photos, on websites like Alamy and Shutterstock. There is sometimes content requirements, such as needing certain file sizes and formats. This usually allows multiple people and businesses to buy your photos, with whatever rights you choose to set. This isn’t going to necessarily be a big earner straight away, but will compress and grow as you post more images over time.

Another way to monetise your travel photography is by selling them directly. We know some people who will contact tourism boards directly to offer their travel photography. Photographers will send over some watermarked (this is very important) images, such as a full portfolio, of the photos they are offering to sell, and this will allow the tourism board to pick and choose which images they wish to buy. This can lead to big sums of money, depending on what rights you give to them.

    Sponsored Posts

This is one for people with a social media following! If you have a certain amount of followers, and/or a good engagement rate, this could be an avenue for you!

Many businesses see the importance of social media now, so will pay creators to use their product in the form of sponsored posts!

You see this across many platforms, with many successful YouTubers now having sponsored videos with ad deals, instagram/TikTok creators having dedicated posts to products or even hotels/trips!

There is a lot of potential within this route, once you get to a substantial follower count! Do not be disheartened if you aren’t at 10k+ followers, as we have seen some creators be gifted and paid to sponsor items at even a few thousand followers!

We will advise that following a specific niche may lead to more opportunities! From a brands perspective (let’s use lunchtime wraps as an example), would you rather sell to a broad audience of people who like food and food content (such as restaurants, foods to try etc), to a more direct audience who watch recipe ideas and foods to make at home, or to people who watch people who makes wraps as a large chunk of the content? Their marketing will likely be so much more beneficial if they are reaching their ideal customer directly!

How have you monetised your travels?

We hope these tips can help you in your own content creation journey! We would love to hear your journey, so please if you use our advice, let us know how it goes on our instagram @ourtwostepstart. We will happily answer any questions you have, and would love to hear your experiences!

  • Top Activities in New York: Must-See Attractions and Things to Do in NYC

Top Activities in New York: Must-See Attractions and Things to Do in NYC

New York is one of the most popular cities for people to visit in the world. It truly is a staple of America, and is filled with endless activities for anyone! As expected, spending a week in New York can be super expensive and is definitely not a budget location!

Here we have compiled the best activities to see in the city to make the most out of the time; plus some important factors to consider when travelling to the City.

When travelling to New York (and even the whole of America), they are very strict at airports so make sure to research and check what visas you will require/documentation to get into the country! You will also need to provide the location of where you will be staying and the reason for your visit when landing. Make sure to pack efficiently for your trip. If you are from America then this won’t apply to you but you will need an American plug head for visiting as they aren’t the same as Europe or the rest of the world. Also, the weather is vastly different depending on the time of year you go so it’s important to pack accordingly.

Below, we have provided a list of activities that we would recommend to all visitors of New York so you can make the most of your trip!

*This post includes affiliate links – these do not cost you anything extra, but means we might earn a commission; this helps us to continue making content and chasing our dreams 🙂

    Statue of Liberty

A trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without stopping to see Lady Liberty. You can easily see her from afar if you head down to south Manhattan on the bank or look across from Brooklyn Bridge! Here you can get some really cool footage on a clear day, but you are rather far away so you can’t take it in fully.

We would opt for people to go on the boat tour to Liberty Island, but wouldn’t recommend going into the Statue of Liberty! The island is small, and the boat travels around the island to give you good views of the statue, with Manhattan in the background. The statue inside requires you to climb a spiral staircase to the top and once you reach the summit, it is cramped and you are limited in time due to a long queue! Check out an awesome Statue of Liberty cruise here.

You may be standing waiting in the statue for 20-30 minutes just to get to the top. Jack – as a 6ft tall man – had to bow his head due to the lack of room at the top. It’s not suitable for anyone 6 ft above and can be awkward to navigate. Also, when you are at the top you can look out the windows which are tinted green and dirty leaving for a subpar view outside. It’s definitely worth seeing as it’s so popular and a cool statue off the busy streets of Manhattan but we don’t think its worth going inside, and enduring a long wait for a very average and limited viewing.

Top of the Rocks viewing deck

Now, everyone talks about how every trip to New York should include a trip to the top of the Empire State Building and it’s probably something we would recommend too! However, we would always choose to visit the Top of the Rocks viewing deck first as it is further north to the Empire State building and gives you a better view of the whole Manhattan including the Empire State building.

The Empire State building is located further south and is built within alongside the other high-rises leading to a lesser view in our opinion! However, it is still a great view and can provide a great activity for an hour or two.

We would recommend that people are to visit the Top of the Rocks viewing deck early in the morning or late at night. The early morning views are spectacular and you can even get a sunrise over central park or the south of Manhattan over the Empire State which gives a perfect start to your morning. However, the night-time visit is spectacular as you see all the buildings across the city light-up! The views are amazing and it really is a view you can admire for a few hours. You can find tickets to the Empire State Building here.

When visiting New York, this was one of our favourite memories and one that we think visitors cannot miss out on!

    Maddison Square Gardens

Maddison Square Gardens is a beautiful stadium located in the heart of Manhattan and hosts some of the top sports in the country! When we visited New York it was during the sport breaks and unfortunately we were unable to watch a game but had a tour and would definitely go back to experience it! The stadium is enclosed which will create a great atmosphere and is a place many celebrities go to enjoy their favourite sport.

Here they do a whole host of sports so that no matter your interests you can find something you will enjoy. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon/evening and experience something that you will truly enjoy!

    New York Pizza Slice

Now this may sound a little crazy but this is a must!! New York is known for their pizza slices and we would recommend anyone who visits to experience it once! It’s a great budget friendly meal and who doesn’t love pizza! The slices are so large that 2/3 slices are enough as a dinner for one!

There’s a range of topping that you can go for but we would recommend a standard mushroom or pepperoni as it’s simple but super tasty! It’s such a staple for New York and one we could definitely eat often! We have found a really great pizza walking tour here, where you get to try three different New York pizza chains!

    Visit Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge is a popular location for people visiting New York and an area you can get some really good views of the city and also see the Statue of Liberty from afar. It also allows you to venture over into Brooklyn to visit a different borough of the New York state.

The bridge is a place a bridge full of padlocks that couples have placed to symbolise their love be we would not recommend doing this and if you are found to do this you might be given a hefty fine!

    Central Park

Central Park is a beautiful park located towards the northside of Manhattan and has a totally different environment compared to the hustle and bustle of the busy streets.

There are beautiful walks and cycle trails perfect for exploring and getting in some exercise. It has some amazing views of the city and has little bodies of water dotted within the park. A great way to wander and spend a few hours exploring the park and the many statues that are on show.

    Museum of Natural History

This museum is one of the most popular and well-known museums across the globe. When visiting, it has a relatively low entrance fee and has many exhibitions on show that you can wander and learn about for hours. There are also some additional exhibitions that are private and offer specific learning for those interested in that topic. These are very informative and a great way to spend your time in the museum.

They have a canteen which offers decent foods and we would probably recommend for people to spend at least half a day in the museum as there is so much to see! You can find admission tickets here.

    Theatre Show

I think this should be a staple when visiting such a large city like New York! There are options for amazing plays like Lion King, King Kong as well as many Broadway shows. There’s many options for people to choose from no matter the interests and is a great way to spend your evening!

You can get dressed up, go out for a lovely meal then spend a few hours watching a perfectly choreographed play and spend the evening in luxury!

Some great picks are Wicked, The Lion King, and Disney’s Aladdin.

    Shopping on 34th street

If you are an avid shopper, then this is a place for you! Across 34th street there are many shops including the infamous Macy’s which offers some of the top brands in the world. These buildings covers multiple floors and are packed with different individual shops like Fred Perry, Superdry and more!! It’s the perfect place to find your favourite brands and maybe go on a little shopping spree as after all.. you are on holiday so why not!!

Here they also have some really cool promotions that may not be offered elsewhere so would be a great place to look for some cool clothing and merchandise! If you LOVE shopping then you could easily spend a day wandering in shops and finding your favourite brands!

    Grand Central Station

Grand Central Station is a beautiful station that has such amazing architecture and statues dotted in and around the building. We personally would visit just to see the station and the beauty it has but you can also use it as a fast and easy way to move across the city and into neighbouring boroughs!

What many people may not know is they have an Apple shop located in the station which is great to wander around and even has a little market full of cakes and other sweet treats which can be a great place to grab food or have a wander!

    Time Square

This is definitely a place you must visit! There is so much going on and it’s a place that is like no other! You will see street performers, musicians, souvenir shops, food stalls, a sky of marketing and so much more! While you are here we would recommend to visit The Hard Rock Café located on Times Square but if you are excited to go, make sure you make a reservation as it is a very popular place to eat!

You can visit the famous Bubba Shrimp or maybe just sit on the steps of Time Square and just watch the world go by. It is a rather busy area and will be tough to move at times but is definitely a place we would recommend to see and admire even if it’s just to walk through Time Square.

New York is such a busy place and has so much to do that it’s hard to do everything. Even when we visited there were things missed off of our list we were unable to do! We would set aside 5/7 days to do New York sufficiently depending on how busy you want to be, and if you like walking. Any longer will make the trip very expensive as it’s certainly not a cheap place to visit and stay!

We hope this Itinerary helps plan your once in a lifetime New York trip so you can get the most of your time there!

  • Top Things to Do in Meknes, Morocco: Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

Top Things to Do in Meknes, Morocco: Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

Meknes is a rural town in the centre of Morocco that is very beautiful. It’s a location we didn’t know much about prior to being in Fes, but did some last minute research to find out that it’s a great place to visit for a day trip!

When visiting Meknes, we would definitely recommend to research the best way to get there from your start location! If you are in Fes, we would take the train as it is only a 40 minute ride to the Town. However, try to book the train tickets online, or get to the station early to guarantee a seat on the train as they can get full up rather quickly (we found this out the hard way)!

You can check out our full blog experience and thoughts on Meknes down below or by visiting our YouTube channel OurTwoStepStart.

How to spend a day in Meknes

Now you have set a day aside for Meknes, we would recommend you to book accommodation (either in person or online) with a local riad Hostel or homestay. This way you will have the authentic experience of staying in traditional housing and meet some of the locals. When visiting Meknes, we stayed in Dar Merzouga which had an amazingly friendly host and if you are in the area we would recommend staying here! Find it here.

Below we have highlighted the best activities you can enjoy when in Meknes so you don’t miss anything!

    Visit the markets

Meknes is known for it’s local markets and is full of them! The markets can stretch for a good 45 minute walk; leaving you with endless opportunity to wander, look for souvenirs for home, or just check out some of the niche stalls! Some of the markets are specific to food or clothing for example, so you can choose the market that is right for you to get them most enjoyment!

When visiting a food market, be aware that it is a poorer country and they aren’t westernised with how they may treat animals. You are likely to see animal body parts such as Donkey hooves for sale or sheep’s head… or even live chickens being purchased and handled for meat. We would recommend for anyone who is bothered by this to avoid these specific areas where meat is sold as it can be graphic.

The markets however definitely offers an opportunity to get some good deals as you can negotiate a lower price for the goods that are on offer. Usually we would recommend to look at the price and find a realistic price you are comfortable and go from there! The locals are likely to take you up on your new price as long as it’s isn’t too low!

    Bab El Masour

This is a monumental Gate that is located in the heart of Meknes just a stones throw from the mass markets. It is known to be one of the best structurally and architecturally gates across north Africa which stands out amongst the old Town. It was completed in the 1730s and build for the sultan’s son Moulay Abdallah.

It’s a great building which attracts crowds of visitors everyday and would be a great place to spend a few hours after wandering the local markets.

    Try local food

As Meknes is a smaller Town, it doesn’t provide many westernised foods and sticks to the more traditional meals that Morocco has to offer. This is a great opportunity to find some local spots to taste authentic Moroccan Cuisine. Traditional food can be provided for dinner during you stay if you book with a Riad and is a great way to taste Morocco homecooked cuisine!

There will also be small independent stalls which will offer a variety of snacks/bites you can grab. The can be specific like pastries or desserts, or shops that offer a range of foods to try! You can even watch some of these make the foods to show it’s freshly made and that it’s a traditional Morocco taste as they cook it in front of you.

    Street photography of locals

As it’s a more traditional and less touristy area, it’s a perfect place to set up and take some street photography of Meknes. It’s known to being a traditional Town so would be great to snap authentic Moroccan living. Places we would recommend for this would be down the tight streets of the Medina, in the busy markets as there’s so much going on, and outside the Bab El Mansour.

The Bab El Mansour is a monumental traditional structure which would be an awesome place to snap some photography. They have horse and cart outside with locals moving from place to place making it a great place to people watch!

The perfect day trip in Morocco

Meknes is a small Town that is full of life and has some beautiful parts we would recommend to visit! It’s the perfect 1-day trip into traditional Morocco and a great way to learn more about the countries culture and lifestyle.

  • Discover London for Less: A Thrifty Traveler’s Guide to Exploring the Capital on a Budget

Discover London for Less: A Thrifty Traveler’s Guide to Exploring the Capital on a Budget

London is one of the most visited cities in the world! People from all over the globe dream to see London’s bright lights and witness the busy life that the city exuberates. Over 20 million (pre-covid) visit London each year internationally, and it’s flooded with tourists daily!

When visiting London it really is difficult to pinpoint the best things to do and places to see. We know people who have lived there for 5-10 years and still have so much they haven’t discovered yet. So, someone who is visiting on holiday, or for a long break often feel overwhelmed with activities, places to eat and sights to see.

This is also coupled with the prices of London being exceptionally high and trying to make the most of your visit and not spend all your savings.

Just for reference, we live an hours train from London and when we visit you can easily find yourself spending £150 on food for 2, £100 on a stay for 2 and £100 for two activities in 1 day! This is not sustainable and when we go London we make sure to find the best budget options so we can maximise our experience whilst not breaking the bank each time!

*affiliate links are included in this post. It does not cost you anything extra, but means we can earn a small commission to help us continue this journey 🙂

    Best Times to Visit London

As expected, the best times to visit would usually be nearing Christmas/New Year or during the summer months.

On the lead up to Christmas, there will be decorations lining each street, festive activities including winter wonderland and markets that will definitely get you in the festive spirit! However, during these events prices are likely higher as it is an annual event that a lot of people go to.

The summer is more so for the beautiful parks and walks you can do and also enjoy some of the activities like the London eye or visiting Buckingham Palace with lovely weather. During the summer, it’s common to rent bikes and go for cycle rides in local London parks or settle for a picnic and enjoy your surroundings which you definitely cannot enjoy all year round.

Best Activities to do in London on a Budget

All the mainstream activities in London do come at a premium price. Everyone comes to London to see the main sights like the London Eye and Tower of London Tours but are these the best things to do in London?

    Local Markets

There’s 2 reasons why we would visit London markets! Firstly, the food is really high quality, fresh and more budget friendly compared to local restaurants in the areas. In London there are so many markets you may just stumble across some! It’s the perfect place to look for your lunch/dinner while not using all your savings! The markets below are the ones we would recommend but there are so many more!!

    • Borough Market
    • Spitalfields
    • Portobello Road Market
    • Covent Garden
    • Camden Market

These markets are great to wander around and see some amazing and abstract things you may not otherwise see! You may not be hungry but you can marvel at all the stalls and potentially pick up something like local honey or jams that you can enjoy later in the day. Each market is full of character and have many different options of food for all to try. The main problem is usually deciding where to eat!

Our favourite market of choice would be borough market. It has some great lunch options including a generous portion of mussels, Thai street food bakeries and more! With perfect and take homes like homemade jams, rich cheeses and some desserts like Ice Cream and dedicated dessert stalls like humble crumble! Even if you aren’t looking for food, its a great place to wander and experience a true local market in the heart of London.

    Hire a bike!

Many people may not know this but London is HUGE! You simply cannot see everything as all the main sights are dotted across the Capital. Most use the Underground which is a cheap and convenient way of moving across the city but can be tough to navigate unless you are a local. Even we struggle sometimes.

An alternative would be to hire a bike and ride across London. This will limit your time going to the underground and moving from point to point without experiencing the whole of London. Some of the best parts of the city is truly wandering and stumbling across some unique and cool places. Whether it’s quirky shops, street artists or performers, food stalls… anything really!

There is nothing better than a gentle bike ride across the riverbank admiring the views and seeing the sights the city has to offer. There are many locations where e-bikes are available for renting. All you need to do is download the app and scan the bike and you on are on your way! When finishing with the bike, you will need to drop it off at a bike stop and they are really cheap to rent out!

    Walking tour

Walking tours are dotted throughout the city and is a great way to learn more on the history or sights throughout London.

If you aren’t familiar with the history, and are interested then it may be worth while to get a walking tour in your specific interest to learn more! An example would be the London Dungeons or a Jack the Ripper tour where you can learn more about what life was like in London centuries ago and how people lived. On these tours you would be taken to locations with significant importance and told facts about the topic at hand. Find our top pick of the Jack the Ripper tour here.

They usually last for an hour or two and you are able to ask questions and learn more about the topic. Included in the tour may be breaks which will allow you to grab food and drink or nip to the toilet when required. It’s a really good way to learn more about the rich history of the city as not all historic locations will include further details like a tour.

These would be aimed towards people who are maybe less familiar with the history and are visiting London as a holiday.

    China Town

China Town is a beautiful part of the city. When you enter, you feel like you have teleported to busy Chinese streets with many food vendors and luscious smells. The streets are decorated with traditional Chinese markings and the food there is cheaper than most of London and has the authentic taste! The area will host events including the Chinese New Year there which would be great to witness.

All the surrounding streets are small local food stops which have traditional Chinese foods which is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. When visiting London is it usually a place we visit as we love the flavours and authentic taste and it’s just a beautiful area to walk through and soak up the atmosphere!

    Museums

There are many museums across London, so many in fact that you can’t realistically see all of them.. even if you lived there! As it’s a city, there is museums for all kinds of things and no matter your interest, there will be one tailored to what you like! As you may not know, most museums in London are free to enter – this includes all public displays. However, each museum does provide private viewings, usually temporary and seasonal, which you would be required to pay for.

These are normally worth while being around £10 – £20 and usually around a famous person or time in history. We have visited many of the museums in London and it is definitely a great way to spend some time to learn about topics you are interested in and a great way to keep costs down while in London.

We would recommend these Museums as these are the ones we have visited and enjoyed the most:

    • Natural History Museum
    • Science Museum
    • National Portrait Gallery
    • Victoria & Albert Museum

These museums offer a lot of variety of interests and a lot of cool viewings that could keep you busy for a few hours in London.

For us personally, our favourite in the National History Museum and is something we would recommend for all travellers to London to experience!!

    Festivals throughout the year

London is well-known for the festivals and events they have throughout the year. Some are so large that people visit from around the world to experience them like new years or the London marathon which is a great time to visit. The atmosphere is very different with a lot of visitors either cheering on runners and enjoying the weekend or celebrating the turn of a new year. It definitely adds a new aspect to visiting London that many people don’t experience.

However, there are many festivals throughout the year that people are almost unaware of and stumble across. These can be music festivals or food festivals. For example, in June this year there is a Taste of London festival in Regent’s Park. This will include top restaurants showcasing their top dishes to onlooking and offer free samples to taste. This would be great to have a wander through and experience some top quality food. You could maybe even use this to find the best place to eat dinner later. It’s perfect as you can decide how much you want to spend or spend nothing at all, it’s totally up to you!!

Across London, no matter the time of year you visit there will be events occurring you just have to be in the right place. Sometimes it can be a simple google search away or you may just stumble upon one! As it’s such a large, vibrant city, we would always recommend to look out for any events, even if it’s just something to experience and walk through as you never know what you might see!

We really could talk about so much London and all that it’s offer but these would be our top picks when visiting London and keeping to a budget!

    Accommodation recommendations

We have also provided our best recommendations on the different accommodation in London. Some budget friendly, medium priced and luxury hotels as well as a hostel option for your trip!

    Hostel Option

This hostel is a great option for backpackers who want award winning accommodation for a fraction of the price. The reviews on this hostel are generally SO positive, with some stating this hostel is ‘perfect’. Located near Tower Bridge, you need to check this spot out! Find it here.

    Budget Option

London can be an extremely expensive place to visit, especially for accommodation reasons- these rooms are a great budget friendly option! Working out at about £34 (based on two people sharing a room) each, these rooms have communal area kitchens, however these do have community bathrooms rather than private – this isn’t a problem for many, and we think this is a great option! Find it here.

    Mid-Range Option

This modern hotel is only a 2 minute walk from Tate modern in the heart of London, and is a beautiful option for your trip to London! This hotel has its own app system, so you can control your room’s lighting and ambiance, amongst access to Disney, Netflix and more, this hotel boasts many impressive features ready for your stay! It will cost roughly £78 per person (based on a room for 2), and is such a great find! Find it here.

  • 7 Must-Try Foods in Southeast Asia: A Culinary Adventure for Every Foodie!

7 Must-Try Foods in Southeast Asia: A Culinary Adventure for Every Foodie!

South East Asia is a remarkable place that is at the top of most people’s bucket list! It’s known for its beaches, people, culture, activities and the topic today… food!

There’s so much to do here and you can never run out of things to see! But for a lot of people, food is so important. Having good meals can really change your experience and view about a country.

If you have ever been Italy for the pasta, Japan for the sushi, or Mexico for it’s tacos, then you will understand how important food is when visiting a country! Food from these places really improves your view on the country, but can also leave a sour taste in your mouth if you don’t enjoy it!

We would always recommend trying the local cuisine wherever you go. It’s the best way to meet locals, learn new cultures and really understand the country more. Even if the food isn’t necessarily one you would normally eat, it’s always worth a try as trying new things is the best way to grow and learn new things about yourself.

Trying a new food could lead to it being your favourite dish you have EVER tried! So what’s the harm?

You need to make sure you are eating at the right spots and also the local foods to get the best experience.

Turning up to a country and flicking through the menu is one way of trying new foods but sometimes its good to do your research and see what’s recommended so you can make the most out of your trip abroad!

So South East Asia… What are the best foods to try? Is it spicy? Where do I eat?

There’s a lot of questions people ask and it’s pretty difficult to figure this out when you have never been before.

As you may already guess, each country would provide different dishes, tastes and ingredients so knowing the most recommended dishes and what ingredients they are typically cooked with will give you a good indication whether you are likely to order them when out there!

Below, we have compiled the BEST FOODS we tried when visiting South East Asia! It is important to note that we we only travelled to 5 countries (Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam & Singapore) so any country we didn’t visit may not be included due to us not trying the food.

The first dish is one of Jack’s FAVOURITE dish and should be first as it’s the perfect way to start your day!

Top foods to try in Southeast Asia

    Thai Omelette!

The Thai omelette can be eaten throughout the day but is usually consumed as a breakfast meal and the omelette typically consists of vegetables, chicken or pork. Jack’s choice would mostly be a vegetable Thai Omelette which comes standard with sticky rice and a side salad.

A Thai Omelette is totally different to what a usual omelette is in Europe. It is fried in oil and includes ingredients such as fish sauce and spring onions.

It’s served with crispy edges and a soft centre which goes perfectly with the rice and is filling so you won’t be left hungry.

This meal was my choice of breakfast throughout our 3 weeks in Thailand with some days it being ordered for lunch also. It’s quite a safe order as people are used to ordering Omelette’s at home but has a lovely twist which really enhances flavour for you!

It is also one of the cheapest dishes on any menu as it’s simple. This makes it a great budget option if you are looking to lower your costs but you can still get some amazing flavour! The lowest cost we say a Thai Omelette for was 50 Baht (roughly £1.40) and we know it’s cheaper at markets!!

We would rate this dish a 10/10 and one we cannot wait to try when going back to Thailand!

It would only cost around £1 ($1.25) which is a total bargain!

      Halo Halo

This is a dish that we hadn’t heard of when visiting the Philippines, but after speaking with some locals, found it to be a traditional dessert that we had to try!

Even after eating it, it’s still hard to understand all the flavours or ingredients as it is full of colour and different foods!

A traditional Halo Halo is shaved ice with condensed and coconut milk with an ice-cream array of toppings. These usually include fruits (like jackfruit, banana and maybe mango!), beans, jelly and even sometimes crushed rice.

There is so much going on with this dish that it’s hard to know what it’s going to taste like… You just have to try it! Be mindful that with so many ingredients, the dessert will be full of different textures, both crunchy and soft, but also chewy. It’s such a weird mixture of textures and flavours, but is beautifully rich and refreshing with a lovely scoop of ice-cream on top!

When we enjoyed our first Halo Halo, it was after a long day at the beach and we were looking for something sweet to enjoy while relaxing and watching the waves.

It’s a very traditional dish, and one that we would recommend trying; but if we were to have it again, we would likely share this as it’s very filling and probably is best split between 2 people. If you have a major sweet tooth and still feeling hungry then you can definitely have one to yourself!

        The Halo Halo is a decently priced dessert around £1 – £2 ($1.25 – $2.50)

        Vietnamese Vegetable Spring Rolls

Now these were our absolute FAVOURITE! Again, this is not a dish I thought was overly popular in Vietnam nor is a must try for travellers. It’s funny as we stumbled upon the food when embarking on the Ha Giang loop.

Upon starting the Ha Giang loop we set off into the mountains and had our days planned by our guides. After a long and tiring day of riding on the back of a motorbike we came to our place of stay for the night and were welcomed with a buffet for all. This buffet was extraordinary as there was unlimited food! Here, deep in the mountains of Ha Giang, in some small town we tasted the immense vegetable spring rolls!

They were super crispy and full of soft veggie’s when you crunched into them! But the flavour was something else. I spend most of my time posting these veggie spring rolls down one by one until I was completely full. We had to get extra plates as they were being finished so frequently.

That was the only time we had vegetable spring rolls but it’s the one thing I am most looking forward to when visiting back to Vietnam!!

We liked it so much that we have attempted (a few times) to recreate the spring rolls at home but it’s never reached the level of the one’s in Vietnam. This is the one thing we would recommend to try above all in Vietnam!

These were enjoyed as part of a buffet but would be a side costing between £1 – £3 ($1.50 – $4).

          Pork Sisig

Pork Sisig was our favourite dish in the Philippines! It’s basically a pork belly dish served with vegetables on a hot plate with a side of rice. It’s served most places and each serving it a little different. Usually, the dish is served with a raw (yes a raw) egg on top which you will mix into the pork and it will sizzle on the hot plate.

The egg is somewhat a strange addition, especially being raw but it really does go with the rest of the dish.

It’s a dish packed with flavour and perfect for either lunch or dinner to fill you up. It’s got a salty taste from the pork with a sweetness from the vegetables and is a dish you will certainly look to order again!

This meal would cost anywhere between £2-£5 dependant on if you are eating at a local/traditional restaurant or not.

            Panang Curry

The Panang Curry is a rich, coconutty curry usually served with a with a choice of meat or fish and rice. Although it is a coconut based curry, it is not heavily coconutty as we both don’t like coconut but do love this curry!

It does also usually includes peanut so anyone who is allergic, be sure to double check the ingredients before eating! The curry is usually rich in flavour and spices with a sweet taste.

We usually eat this with chicken as it soaks up the flavour of the sauce and goes really well with the spices.

As you may already know, there are a lot of different curries available in South East Asia that is worth trying.. most notably the Massaman Curry, Thai Red Curry and the Thai Green Curry. These all have a burst of flavour and well worth trying as people will have their preferences.

For us, this was the better of the curries but would definitely change between them depending on our preferences each night!

The Panang Curry is also known for working well with shrimp! The spices match perfectly with fresh shrimp leaving a beautiful taste.

As it’s eaten as a dinner it is more expensive than the other dishes on this list but still would only cost between £2-£4 ($3-$5).

              Pad Thai

Pad Thai is a MUST TRY in Thailand! It’s such a staple in Thailand and something you can’t miss when visiting the country. The dish is so simple in making but surprisingly so flavourful and rich in spices. It’s so cleverly cooked and presented as usually you are provided with a small mountain of peanuts and a separate mountain of chilli on the side of your plate which you can choose to add if you wish with a squeeze of lemon when served.

The spices give good kick of heat and the peanuts help enhance the overall flavours of the dish and provide a slight nutty flavour which is very much welcomed. This is a dish that was ordered on many occasions due to the flavours and moreish nature of the dish.

It is definitely one of the cheaper items on the menu but definitely don’t look over it if you think it won’t come with good flavour! You can find local restaurants selling Pad Thai for as cheap as £1 ($1.25) and it’s always served with a generous portion.

                Bahn Mi

This is quite popular dish and very different to the rest on this list. It’s pretty much a simple sandwich on first glance but Vietnam have added their own flavours and spices to enhance and change the flavours! Usually, it is served with thinly sliced pork or chicken as the main meat with a host of veggies and unusual ingredients.

The Bahn Mi includes a generous spread of Pate and includes coriander, green onion, chilli, carrot, cucumber, sometimes pickles and a strong drizzle of mayonnaise and Maggi sauce to finish.

A perfect lunchtime meal that you can grab on the go! In Thailand, you are able to get Bahn Mi for as cheap as £0.80 ($1) which is super cheap and affordable!

                  What are your thoughts?

There are many other dishes that we missed off this list which we wish we could include but these would be the main ones we would want to go back and try and could never get bored of! We would like to give a special mention to Pho as that is a beautiful dish that is versatile with flavours, meats and more!

When visiting South East Asia we would recommend you trying all these and would love to know your thoughts on our list of best foods to try in South East Asia!
